Signs Your Business Needs an IT Provider

Updated: Aug 16

Many small to medium-sized businesses only call their IT company when there's a fire, a major issue that brings work to a halt. This reactive, break-fix, "call as needed" approach might get you through the day, but it's not a sustainable way to protect your business. Here are the warning signs that it's time to move to a proactive IT partner.
You're Stuck in Break-Fix Mode
If you find yourself calling your IT provider way too often just to put out fires, it's a sign that the break-fix, on-call model no longer makes sense for your business. At some point, reactive support stops being efficient, and starts being risky.
You Don't Know Your Own Backup Status
Do you have a server you haven't logged into in a while? Are you unsure whether it's actually being backed up, or when the backup last ran successfully? Not knowing the answer to these questions is a major red flag. A backup you haven't verified is really just a guess.
You Have Compliance or Cybersecurity Insurance Requirements
If your business has to comply with industry regulations or carries cybersecurity insurance, ongoing IT support isn't optional. You need to be certain that:
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is in place
Your email hosting is secure and protected
Locking your computers and servers when not in use
Departing employees go through a proper offboarding process so they lose access to company resources immediately
You're Not in Proactive Mode
Keeping workstations current with the latest updates and security patches shouldn't be an afterthought, it should be routine. If someone asks whether your computers are up to date and your honest answer is "I don't know," that's a clear sign you need dedicated IT support.
The same goes for backups and endpoint protection. If you're not sure your backups have been tested and are working, or if you don't know whether you have EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) protection in place, those are both reasons to bring on full-time IT support.
The Bottom Line
Most security vulnerabilities today come from user error, not sophisticated attacks. Having your systems properly monitored means that when something looks wrong, someone gets alerted, and can act fast to secure your accounts, your company, and your clients' data before a small issue becomes a big one.
If any of this sounds familiar, it may be time to move on from reactive, break-fix support and partner with an IT provider who keeps you protected around the clock.
